Bryan Hullihen and the Value of a Unified Front in Sober Living

My name is Bryan Hullihen and I have had the pleasure of working at several treatment centers over the years and owning several programs ranging from treatment to sober living. When I first began this journey, I remember being told that the problem of alcoholism and drug addiction is a family disease. When I was initially being trained and educated on this concept one of my college courses came to mind which was the concept of family dynamics. Family dynamics is, in short, the study and consideration of the family unit as a single organism. The unit is comprised of individual players who each play a role in the unit, however, the unit itself is the focus. The study goes on to explain how the unit fights to maintain what is called a homeostasis, balance, once its ‘set point’ is established. The concept of alcoholism and addiction fits nicely into this construct and if it was as easy to treat as it is to explain the success rates would be much higher. The concept of family dynamics is only a small portion of the bigger problem. Being on the front lines of treating addiction for so many years and answering my phone by saying, “Treatment services, this is Bryan Hullihen", I've spoken to many families on the other end of that line. Too many parents have seen the worst of this disease and continue failing to give it the respect it deserves. Many family members see some measure of improvement and think it's time for their child to move on when their treatment is not finished. The reason for this vary, however, the primary cause is denial or ignorance to the power of their child’s mental disorder - alcoholism/addiction. It is for this reason that the family must receive some measure of treatment as well. This of course will not be as extreme as the level of care for their child but some education must be given to the parents/loved ones of the individual in treatment. Family counseling, group therapy, and regular updates from the facility where their family member is receiving treatment are all necessary should a united front be formed between the treatment center and family members against the alcoholism and drug addiction. Many can accomplish what one person cannot and with the proper support and care these methods will contribute greatly to your or your loved one's recovery.
